Room Reveal: Kids Nook Reading Area

Remember our teaser post on turning your kid’s closet into a reading nook area? Well today is the full reveal of the final design of our mini-makeover.

Over the course of one night, I was able to paint the focus wall of the closet. We ended up using three main colors (Warm Pink, Pink Wink and Aqua Glow), all in Valspar Zero VOC*, sold exclusivity at Lowe’s. I have a love for black and white (I also used Kettle Black and The Perfect White), but this time around I wanted to include some color on our walls using Valspar Zero VOC in Kettle black, Pink Wink, Warm Pink and Aqua Glow.

Our daughter even helped me paint her closet wall, and, thanks to Valspar’s Zero VOC* formula, which contains no harsh fumes, the paint is safe to use around the kids. VOCs are Volatile Organic Compounds that can decrease indoor air quality and can be found in many common household items including cleaning products, adhesives, cosmetics, disinfectants and, of course, paint. Valspar’s complete line of Zero VOC* paint doesn’t compromise quality; with Zero VOC* you can have peace of mind that the product is safe for the environment as well as the health of your kiddos. The paint was easy to apply and provided great coverage.

Now to the full room reveal, here is the before picture:

We painted over the gray and white stripes and now we have a more modern, clean look!

Tips if you are thinking of doing the same wall design:

We have textured walls so I had to be very careful while painting the edges; I used painter’s tape made specifically for delicate surfaces. I painted the inside of the geometric shape first, then I used a plastic flexible putty knife to press down on the edge of the painter’s tape, then painted over using a roller.

To make my pink watercolor geometric spot, I painted using one coat using Pink Wink, and then, before it was dry, I used a rag to gradually add Warm Pink, and then I added Camille Pink to make it darker. I used a second rag to spread and blend the colors where it looked best. I even added more Perfect White around the edges using a third rag.
