DIY Upside Down Rose Costume

This year, My kids have three costumes each. Yep, we love Halloween! One for taking to school, one for going Trick or Treating and one for just a photoshoot.

My daughter asked is she could be a pretty flower and while browsing for inspiration, I decided to make her into a pretty rose by making a skirt in the form of a rose and a headband on the form of the flower stem.

It turned so amazing I had to share how I made it.

  • yrd. of satin fabric
  • Green felt
  • Blank Headband
  • 2inch elastic
  • Lighter

Cut about 9 petal shapes out of satin fabric.
Using a lighter, burn the edges to prevent fraying and form the petals to have more of a edge.

Measure your girl’s waist and cut elastic.

Arrange and pin fabric petals to elastic leaving about 3 inches apart. And sew to the elastic band.

Apply a second two of satin fabric petals overlapping the previous row.

Cut out a few felt green stem leaves and see on top of the third row of satin fabric petals.
Once finished, attached a ribbon to each elastic end.

To make the Headband:

Use a piece of thin tissue paper roll and over with green felt. Cut out a few felt leaves and hot glue to the green stem then hot glue to headband.

Style with a green onesie, leotard or turtle neck. I had a hard time finding a matching green leotard so I dyed a Target white kids turtle neck in a dark green dye. And it only cost $5 for the turtle neck and $2 for the dye!

Add a tutu on the bottom of the petal skirt to make it fluffy and more round.

Will you be DIYing your kids Halloween costumes this year?
