DIY Knot Pillows Tutorial

I love unique pillows and love making them in mini versions because honestly, that is all I can sew.

We recently did a mini makeover in our daughter’s bedroom and added a few DIY projects that included these knot type accent pillows to add texture. This is my third most favorite project so far, the second is our Balloon Animal Pillows and my all time favorite is the Easy Knitted Bow scarf.

DIY-Knot-Pillows

Materials:
– 1/3 yard of knit fabric (Make sure it has a good stretch)
– Pillow stuffing
– an empty wrapping paper roll
– Sewing Machine, needle, thread
– Dowel rod

In order to start this project you will need to check out our original Balloon Animal Tutorial.
Cut and sew (2 strips) 5 x 1yrd  of knit fabric. Once sown, turn the fabric inside over using the empty wrapping paper roll.

The process of forming the pillow is like the balloon animal tutorial. It’s easy and to make the stuffing a lot of easier, insert the tube into the knit fabric then insert the pillow stuffing with the rod.

Now, to make the knot part of this pillow. This type of knot is called Turk’s Head Knot but I have made a few adjustments to make it easier and faster.

I took a few tries to understand the knot but at the end it was just as how I imagined it would turned out.

This is the image I used to make the knot pillow. To make the know pillow, do exactly as the picture is shown except you will be using two at a time (ignore steps 9-11).

Once you are into step 8, pull the remaining ends and make it tighter to form a ball. Push the ends inside and sew them against the inside.

Once you make one knot pillow, you will not stop making them. I made three and making three more for my living room, bedroom and one to giveaway to one lucky reader via our Instagram @blogali.

      Angie, please forgive me for butting in here. I understood you directions easily but some people may not have done as much sewing as you and I have and I thot maybe I could phrase things just a bit different.

      My reply to the requests for a video:

      You don’t need a video. Let’s go over the instructions with a few things stated just a little differently:
      Materials:
      – 1/3 yard of knit fabric (Make sure it has a good stretch)
      – Pillow stuffing
      – an empty wrapping paper roll
      – Sewing Machine, needle, thread
      – Dowel rod

      CUT AND SEW STRIPS OF KNIT FABRIC: strips should be 5 inches wide and 1 yard long. (Make two.) Lay the fabric out lengthwise, fold it over on itself (maintaining the 1 yard length, creating a 2 1/2 inch wide piece of fabric). (You must fold the right side of the fabric to the inside.)So you will be looking at the wrong side of the fabric when you sew it. It looks like a 5/8″ seam was sewn. (Please correct me if I’m wrong!) Sew the fabric down the 1 yard length. Turn the fabric inside out using the empty wrapping paper roll. (Use the dowel to push the end of the fabric tube inside of the wrapping paper roll from one end of the wrapping paper roll to the other end.) Bring the end of the fabric tube out of the paper roll and fold it backwards onto the wrapping paper roll — you will be turning the fabric tube right side out! Feed the whole fabric tube onto the paper roll. No need to sew the ends shut yet. That will be done after you have formed the knot. Now feed the stuffing into the wrapping paper roll and tamp it down with the dowel. When it is firm enough for you just remove the wrapping paper roll. Repeat this process with the other 5 inch by 1 yard strip of fabric.
